Teaching Senior-Level Instrumental Analysis Using QuickTime Movies and Flash Animations Tom Chasteen, Department of Chemistry Sam Houston State University

Abstract: Static examples of complex instrumental schematics were the only views my senior-level students had in the past to develop an understanding of the working and operation of the ubiquitous analytical instruments. For a few older instruments I could open and point out the important parts;

however, this is impractical, impossible, or useless for GC-MS, monochromators, atomic absorption spectrometry, etc., and in any case, students could never see the insides as the instrument was actually working. While for some students this was OK, for a significant number this was not enough and I struggled to find a better way to teach these ideas. Computerbased animations have helped in

this process. Animations using Macromedia Flash and QuickTime which are finally entirely cross-platform compatible--have been constructed to help students plumb the relative complexities of instrumental methods I teach in my college classes. Examples will be presented with brief details of the

instrumental concepts stressed and software used to construct the animations. All animations are on the web: www.shsu.edu/~chm_tgc . In the beginning we found
